Playing while drunk
How do I convince myself this isn't okay? I'm in college and naturally end up back home on my couch at my laptop at 3am 3-4 nights a week. Usually I won't play any poker, but occasionally I'll fire up a SNG far out of my roll.
I play the $22s and last night I played a $109 and two $55s. Whether or not I cashed in any of them is irrelevant, I'm still pissed at myself and this has happened before. I know I have a drinking problem, the question is how do I prevent my drinking problem from taking a chunk out of my bankroll? |

Re: Playing while drunk
You obviously associate poker with entertainment.

You obviously associate poker with entertainment. [/ QUOTE ] On some level, yes. I'm not really playing to survive, and I don't ever expect to be. I think my goal is to just keep playing and building a bankroll and maybe eventually move up. But I really do enjoy playing (especially because I only play about 300 SNGs a month, I don't get burnt out). I do have to cash out about 1/3 of my bankroll this month, so it's starting to be more important. That's why this kind of stuff makes me hate myself. Who knows, maybe next week I'll come home and play a $530! |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I'll be ready for the self-discipline as related to drinking in about 5 weeks when I graduate. The funny (ironic?) part is, I'm as conservative as it gets with my bankroll. I have a 120 buy-in roll for the $22s and NEVER take shots above that. |

Re: Playing while drunk
I've actually cut down on drinking quite a bit since I started playing poker. I used to have 4-5 drinks on a normal day. I don't know if that's alcoholic level or anything, but I'm sure it wasn't good. Now I don't have more than 1 (usually 0) if I know I'm going to want to play later (most days). Set a rule that you're not going to play if you have more than x number of drinks and stick with as best you can. If you're like me, you'll find yourself drinking less so you can play more.

Re: Playing while drunk
Building bankroll = dead sober, normal stakes
Drunk entertainment = donking it the hell up in $1.20 'stars SnG's! Wheeeeeeeee! You're taking shots when drunk when you should be blowing $5 for fun instead. |

Re: Playing while drunk
I wouldn't go so far as to play the fake money tables, but what I do when I feel like playing, but don't think I'm in the right frame of mind to do so, is to fire up a $5 turbo. I normally play the $22s also so the money doesn't mean much to me. You seem to be doing the opposite.
