Default I want to get TiVo. Which box do you have / should I get?

Getting tired of this VCR crap especially after my VCR cut off the last 10 minutes of Lost tonight. I noticed there are a few different boxes, though. They've got the 40 hour standard and 80 hour standard, but they also have a 40 hour box with a DVD recorder.

Do you all have the standard recorder or the DVD one? Is the DVD one worth the extra $250?

I won't bother with a "should I get TiVo at all?" question since I bet it won't even be close.

I got the 40 hour standard 4 months ago and I love it. I'm never hurting for more space either. My tivo is hooked up to my network and I believe through some 3rd party programs and some tweaking you can move stuff to/from your tivo and burn it onto DVDs from your computer. Someone else probably knows better.

tivo integrated with your satellite / cable service provider is vastly superior IMO to the stan d-alone boxes.

Especially if you're on DirecTV and can get the Tivo branded boxes with their superior software over the generic competitors.

If you're on cable, you can usually get a DVR for around $10 - $15 / mo to your current package.

If you're decently technical its not that hard to build your own DVR.
I used a myth box before I got my HD Tivo.

I purchased a 40-GB TiVo, then got a 300 GB HD from CC (cost ~ $50), then dropped it into the second HD slot on my box. (additional parts, $15 or so). If you have a screwdriver and the ability to follow instructions, this is a much better route than getting a high-capacity Tivo from the manufacturer.

if u have cable/satellite, then get a DVR through your company

chances are it'll have DUAL-TUNER and be able to record HD...most tivos are one-tuner and non-hd

dual-tuner allows u to watch one thing while recording another or record 2 things while watching one of those or a recorded program

one-tuner means u are either watching what is recording or what already recorded

If you're buying tivo, wait for Series 3 later this year. Otherwise, get a DVR from your cable company. The software is usually terrible, but like everyone says...DualHD recording capability.
