Default Hyphenated last names?

What say you, OOTiot?

I'm referring to the practice of combining two last names via a hyphen, an example as such would be Smith-Johnson.

My sister in-law does this. I personally find it rather emasculating. My wife did not have the temerity to try this, so I don't know how I would have reacted.

i think it's dumb as hell. not that i think the woman should automatically take the man's name. i mean,,.. actually, i do think that she should.. but if she wants to keep her own name, whatever.

hyphenating is just the worst of both worlds, and then when they pass the hyphenated name onto the kid, WOW.

It's a common practice in some countries such as Costa Rica. For both males and females... you stop at 2 though.

Sam,

My wife dropped her middle name she did not like and uses her maiden name as her middle name now.

I find this to be acceptable. I would not like it if she had hyphenated our last names together. In fact, I told her if she would have requested that, I would have asked her to keep her own last name, and not take mine.

I work with a guy who has a hyphenated last name. He's a cool guy, but it's weird, because his two last names are rather weird sounding together. Almost feminine. (Something he is definitely not)

Name-dependent of course, but generally the sign of a douchebag or a minority.

I think that the only males who should be permitted to have hyphenated names are foppish English aristocrats.
