Default Hand \"Laydowns\", Master Players...you have learnt...

Hi every body, really enjoy being here, sure 99% of people here appreciate some body making an effort and starting a thread which makes you think or at least you come away having some thing to think about or appreciate about the game of Texas Hold'ed.

I visited my parents just before X-Mas and my father started to talk to me about poker, he went on to explain how he felt the online cards were just fake and produced so many bad beats "its not true", any way that’s some thing others can discuss, I am not talking about that..

My dad who has appreciated the game of poker since he was 16 said that he visited and was a part of many tournaments , during one of these tournaments he saw in particular one player who always got to the end (of the tournaments.

He said that he watched his play and could not believe some of the hands which he fold, really big hands, and he folded them.

What I would like to ask every body here is along those lines.

What hands have you seen which were folded (by a player) which turned out to be wise lay downs but you personally would have played (them).

What I mean to say is, have you ever seen some body play and lay down hands which you were impressed with, if so can you give examples.

Thanks, flame me for the thread if you like I am just trying to create some interesting conversation about the great game.

buddha,

i appreciate you taking the time to make these thought-provoking thoughts deep into the game of Texas Hold'ed.

i once asked a guy that played with tj cloutier what he thought tj and the other pros did better than an average player. he said "huge laydowns".

this was in the middle of a tourney. and the very next hand he showed me pocket kings and folded them when someone raised. the other guy showed pockets aces (of course lol!) and he repeated himself "tough laydown".

i hope this story enlightens you as to why a big laydown is as good as a big win. good luck at the tables my friend.

That is a prefect example, laying down pocket kings, in that situation you would almost bet your life that no body would have pocket aces at the same time,... but there the other player had it..

Great addition to the thread.

FWIW, someone else will have AA around 4.5% of the time when you are dealt KK at a full table.

I'd pick a better spot to "almost bet my life."

Hell yeah, and I'm just getting started. You and I have been playing a little longer than most of these internet whippersnappers. I've got a ton of sick laydown stories that I'm gonna contribute.

Here's one that I made at the Bellagio. Some 95-year old guy with an oxygen tank who hasn't played a hand in 2 hours raises UTG. I'm next to act, and I look down to see...ace-king, SUITED. That's right: big slick, SUITED. Spades, too. Really sweet looking hand. So, I go into the tank. I mean, I figure that, if I wait long enough, Gramps might keel over, and then I can reraise to try to steal the "dead money." But, that old [censored] calls for the clock, so it's decision time. Just like on WPT, baby. To make a long story short, I mucked. Someone else had the misfortune of going to showdown, though. Gramps had AA and took it down. Pretty sick read by me, IMHO.

By the way, did I mention that this was at 4/8 limit? Makes it even sicker, doesn't it...?

So, anyway, that's just the first of my sick laydown stories. I'll try to post some more this afternoon...

In a card club in NYC once I was playing 1/2 NL with this supertight player playing with his girlfriend watching. He was one of the best hand-readers I've ever seen. One hand, he called in EP with 22, there was a raise and a few callers and he called.
Flop: 389 (I think rainbow). It got checked around. Turn:2. He checked, preflop raiser bet 3/4 pot, there was a caller and he shows me and his girlfriend his hand and mucks, telling me "That guy (preflop raiser) has to have flopped a set)." The river came another 2, and the two players got it all in and sure enough the preflop raiser had 88.
If that player had been worse, he would have went perfect-perfect to scoop a huge pot.

this one time i was multitabling at the commerce casino in my hotel room on that internet service you buy for 24hrs a pop, anyway...

i had a big hand at one of my tables, i think AA no draw vs three people all in playing Omaha...anyway i got all in and ran off a boat vs a set and a straight

but the big laydown wasnt that hand, it was that right AFTER that hand happened apparently my paid internet time ran out and AS IM STARING AT AA THE CONNECTION DIES AND I FOLD!

biggest laydown ever, i make big laydowns like this all day long, kagame = god

buddha,

Here is one that was pretty awesome. I was playing a $10/20 blind NL game. Things had been pretty crazy and everyone had $50,000+ stacks. In this hand, both of us had $150k or so.

Pre-flop, I raised to $100 w/ 8h9h, a rock raised to $500 (he only did this w/ big pairs and AK), and I called.

The flop was incredible. Th Jh Qh. Oh my.

I just bet straight out, $1000. This guy thought a moment and raised it to $5000. Wow. OK, he made a big hand too. I bet he probably had either a set or maybe testing w/ something like AK w/ Ace of hearts. I call, barely containing my excitement.

The turn was great, Qs. I decided to bet out $10k, and this guy now minraises me to $20k. Wow, he has something good! I make it $40k, planning to milk him for another $40k or so on the river. He thinks for a sec, looks at me, and goes ALLIN, $100k more. He was supremely confident and just looked more relaxed and confident than I'd ever seen anyone.

WTF?

I look at the board, and at that moment it hits me. The guy had AhKh and flopped the royal flush.

I walked through the hand and realized this was absolutely the only thing he could have. Because, if he didn't have it, he would have to be worried about both Ah Kh and 8h 9h, so there's really no hand he could have besides Ah Kh.

After a few minutes of thought, I said "Nice flop, old man. Royal flushes are awesome. I FOLD." Then I flipped my idiot end straight flush up to and threw it into the muck.

The old guy was stunned. He just kept muttering "YOU FOLDED THAT? YOU FOLDED A TWO-CARD STRAIGHT FLUSH?" The rest of the table was also in shock. It was by far my proudest poker moment.

As the guy is raking in all the stacks of cash and chips, another guy grabs his cards and flips them over. I didn't even need to see them, since I knew what he had. I took a quick glance anyway and puked when I saw the two queens.
