i've never really played an instrument.
anyone have any tips...suggestions...etc that could lead me down the path toward being able to play a couple of songs to where they are at least recognizable?

Google like "guitar chord chart" for basic chords. AFter you have learned them, are various sites with easy to learn songs. This is one of the: http://www.iol.ie/~murphypj/index.html .

i got a used guitar..supposedly good for learning as it's like 3/4 size.

it is an accoustic...made in Canada i believe

brand: La Patrie
model: Motif

came with a nice guitar case and a 'guitar chords' book that is over my head.

by the way...i don't know anything about guitars..paid 125$ for the guitar and case..but the guitar is in great shape..no scratches/dents/etc

Please don't be that guy that pulls that thing out at a BBQ/Bonfire/Party and tries to play John Mayer songs for girls.

1) Learn how to read music if you don't already know how to do so.
2) Learn how to read tab
3) Get a guitar teacher to teach you proper fingering and technique, preferably one who can teach classical and jazz
