Video iPod vs. PSP
Alright, I'm sorry if this has been already discussed, but I'm weight my options with a purchase, and I've heard varying reviews.
Basically, I'm looking for overall functionality. I'm not necessarily a 'gamer', but I might actually 'play' on the PSP here and there. I also wouldn't plan on actually 'buying' many movies on those little DVDs, so I'm not sure how much I would use that feature. What I'm most interested in is how flexible are these devices in general? I mean, I have a decent sized collection of TV shows, etc. aquired by various means and in various formats. I've seen people watching shows on the video iPod, but how convienent is that in general? Would I have to convert my collection all to .mp4? Or does the video iPod play other formats as well? And with the PSP, I assume this is feasible, since I assume the PSP is the more powerful machine. Is it possible to simple install some WMP-like software that will play multiple file extensions? And, if so, is it possible to A) Burn PSP DVDs and B) play 'files' from the DVD drive, not just DVDs, or will I have to have everything on the PSP hard-drive (only 1GB, i've heard). As far as music is concerned, I'm sure the iPod is far and a way better. But, is it possible again to play music from the DVD drive or hard-drive. Overall how useful is the PSP for music? So, to wrap up, this is how I understand the two items. Video Ipod - Huge storage, video capability (only .mp4 from what I've seen), simple music interface, and slightly cheaper PSP - Gaming and DVD playing (only special 'PSP DVDs'), wireless card (i think?), seemingly endless possibilities outside of that (video/ music playing), but maybe more complicated that I should get involved with. Anyways, those are my brief questions and what I know currently, any light shed on the items is very appreciated. |

Re: Video iPod vs. PSP
simple answer:
ipod if your primary purpose is to listen to music. (to your question - it is possible to convert other video files into .mp4 files...it's free and easy...this goes for both PSP and ipod though) PSP if your interestes are divided equally amongst music, movies, games. from my experience, the video functionality of these things is best used in 1 place: airplanes. not sure where else you really would want to watch videos on these things? note that the ipod battery will only last for about 2 hours playing video. not sure what psp is. also, not that the PSP is much much bigger. if you want to put it in your pocket a lot, ipod is much more convenient ok that turned into a long answer |

Re: Video iPod vs. PSP
they both suck.
ipod has 1 hr video battery lifetime. and psp is good to play mediocre games. get an ipod for music, and play games/movies on ur computer |

Re: Video iPod vs. PSP
Throw a 1 gig memory card on your PSP, and you can play mod games (like SNES, n64, genesis, etc), movies/shows you download, and use it for mp3s/
The Ipod has a great function. The PSP is the overall cooler toy. |

Re: Video iPod vs. PSP
As to why I'm interested, I travel a lot more than the average person currently. 6+ hours on train per week, and numerous global flights for the next few years.
My preference, as I said, is whichever is more rounded and upgradeable without too much hassle. I like the sound of being able to play NES/etc. ROMs on the PSP, but is this easily feasible for someone with decent computer knowledge? 1 hour battery life is a joke, and if that's true for videos on the video ipod, that is definetly not an option. Is this actualy true? What is the life on these things. I mean, my nano lasts forever, I can't imagine that videos are 'that' more consuming... Still nothing about DVD burnability for the PSP among other things....anyone? |

Re: Video iPod vs. PSP
i have both. had the new ipod since it came out and just bought a psp. trying to watch videos on the ipod is def a pain. i only have the 30 gig, so it hardly last 2 hours for me.
the psp i don't have a bigger memory card yet, but the screen is really nice. for traveling it would be good to watch a movie. a 4 gig memory card was recently on sale for 130 i believe, so maybe the prices on those will drop more soon |

[ QUOTE ] ipod has 1 hr video battery lifetime. [/ QUOTE ] this just isn't true [/ QUOTE ] It depends if you get the 30GB iPod video or the 60GB. If you look at the specs the 60GB has longer battery life than the 30GB for both music and videos. |

[/ QUOTE ] it lists 2hrs for 30, 3 for 60. i would believe these specs though, in the past some reviewers have found the ipod had better battery life than apple had listed. |
