Default Buy In Variance

Just curious...what would you guys consider a "real bad night" compared to a "normal bad night" in terms of buy-ins...what is normal variance is what i'm asking

real bad = 8+ buyins

so would you say a NL TAG player can see normal swings of +/-4 buyins during a session with good play? Or is that still too much of a variance?
