I spent three months volunteering and traveling in Peru. I lived with different families the whole time, no hostels/hotels.

Baxter,
Don't you think this thread should be reserved for a Peruvian native? I think 3 months hardly qualifies you as an expert on the country. |

Nope, Peru is very poor but not violent or unstable.
If you're looking to get raped though, don't leave Lima. |

There are still Inca's that live in the mountains and near Cusco. They speak Quechua, and I picked up a few words. Most of the country speaks Spanish. Quechua and Aymaran are also official languages but only spoken by the ancestors of the Inca's and other tribes.

The average income in Peru is $2500 (converted to US) per person per year. 48% of the country is in poverty, so I doubt too many people from Peru are on 2+2.

The night life in Trujillo is amazing. It didn't hurt that the hardly ever see Americans, so they were all very curious. The nightlife in Cusco (the main tourist city, pretty much of South America) is way too Americanized. Half the people in the city are gringos. You had to ask the right questions to find Peruvian clubs, and they weren't thrilled with Americans entering their clubs. I chanced it though.
The girls in the north were amazing. It took a couple of days to get used to them, since they are different than US girls. I found the girls in the south to be too Indiany for me. They were also too used to Americans in the south. Here's me and two girls from Trujillo (the north). ![]() |
