Default My dog needs surgery, would you pay for it?

I just found out I have to spend 3K on my dog to fix a messed up leg. To the average american this is 10% of their yearly salary. In percentage points, how much would you spend to save your dog?

Cats are worthless so those people need not respond.

I can't get past this to even think about the question.

I know it sucks, but you kinda have to do a cost analysis here. How old is the dog? Will fixing its leg improve its standard of life considerably? My wife works in a vet's office, so I hear the stories how people will pay tons of money for tests for animals that don't have much chance of life expectancy.

depends ALOT on the exact situation...

my situation would be - i have a 4y/o yellow lab, and labs of good breeding and general good health live to about 11 y/o on average. if the surgery enabled him to live out his life to normal term relatively pain free i would spend 100% of my current yearly salary.

How old is the dog (will this dog be living that much longer to justify this cost)? How fond of the dog are you? If this animal is your most cherished pet ever, this shouldn't even be a question.

If you're really sweating 3k to fix this dog's leg, go with amputation, much cheaper and the dog won't even really miss it. If you don't really like the dog enough to save it's leg, just have it put to sleep.

I know this isn't the point of the post, but if you truly didn't have the money to spend I would gladly contribute $100 to the surgery.

Dogs kick ass.

See avatar, would spend $10s of thousands of dollars on him if I had to.

Wouldn't think twice about it either.

I don't have a fixed salary, so I can't give you a % point, but, a lot.
