Default Why is it ok to ask poker players how much they make?

Is there any other profession where this is acceptable? I have all kinds of people, some I barely even know, ask me how much I make a year or per hour. But if I ask them, it's incredibly rude? Wtf? Is this socially acceptable or have I just been encountering rude people?

I have always wondered this myself. In fact I will definitely make a point of telling someone they are a scumbag for asking me next time it happens. I would never ask to see their paycheck

because poker income is extremely variable. Usually when someone tells you what they do you have an idea of what they make, not so with poker

Kurosh, don't be so petulant, you know the answer is because poker is seen as gambling/fun rather than as work so it's fine to ask people. It's also fine for you to say, "I'd rather not talk about it."

But then they'd think you're really a loser and some sort of degenerate gamblor! But I guess we shouldn't care what others think. I think its better to respond with a vague, but positve answer. Like "a healthy sum" or "enough to pay for [pricey object]" and such.

These are pretty good. My answer's usually "enough to live comfortably." Humble yet it doesnt make you seem like a [censored] dead beat degenerate.

The correct answer is:

"I make more money per month, than you will ever save in your lifetime".

After that, they don't ask again.

Friend's friend: Oh, so you make money from poker? So how much do you make?

You: About one and a half big bets every one hundred hands or so.

Friend's friend: Huh? What do you mean?

You: Well I usually play 5/10 and I get about 300 hands in every hour so $45 plus rakeback which rounds out to about $50 an hour.

Friend's friend: Oh thats not bad.

You: Yeah th- WAIT DAMN IT!
