Default Jays trade Koskie for minor league pitcher...

Link

I dont really like this trade, shouldnt they have traded Koskie and Hinske for a decent pitcher at least? They got almost nothing for Koskie, seems like a bad deal to me.

We added him for a guy who won't make it to the big leagues ever. Koskie is still a top 30 3B and we got him for (virtually) nothing. It's a great trade because:

A) it provides real depth at 3B
B) it allows Bill Hall to fill in at 2b and SS when needed

It's a great trade for the Brewers. They get Koskie at a very good price for basically nothing since the pitcher is a non-prospect.

Koskie's main value lies in the fact that he is very good versus right handed pitching and he's a solid defensive player. His downside are his injury issues and his inabiltiy to hit lefties. Basically, he will get 300-400 ABs almost exclusively versus righthanded pitching.

Here are his three year splits versus righties:
Avg OBP SLG OPS
.287 .388 .504 .892

In '05 - 245 at bats - .802 OPS vs. righties
In '04 - 289 at bats - .894 OPS vs. righties
In '03 - 299 at bats - .962 OPS vs. righties

As you can see, his numbers have declined over the last 3 years, but he will have regular rest and is in a great position to succeed in Milwaukee since he'll basically never have to play versus lefties with Bill Hall on the club. Hall had a .967 OPS versus lefties last year. An .850 OPS is certainly not out of the realm of possibility for Koskie.

Also, the Overbay trade now basically became Lyle, Taubenheim, and Wolfe, for Koskie, Bush, Jackson, Gross, and several million in cash. Another fleecing by Melvin.

The Jays picked up Troy Glaus earlier, and Koskie is just injury prone and expensive dead weight. Enjoy him Milwaukee.

It's a salary dump, obviously there wasn't a huge market for Hinske or Koskie because otherwise we would get more. I would be a lot angrier if we had 5 corner infeilders each getting paid 4 million + on opening day.

It is possible that none of these guys will ever be productive big leaguers. Koskie is over the hill and injury prone. David Bush has been very incosistent in two plus years in the bigs. Gabe Gross has had one great spring training, and I am not sure about Zach Jackson. It's not a fleecing untill you see how Bush, Gross, and Jackson pan out.

It's not much of a salary dump considering the Blue Jays sent 7.35 million to the Brewers. Koskie will only cost the Brewers roughly 2 million per year over the next two years.
