I had a disagreement with a friend yesterday... we were talking about a girl and I said I'd "hooked up" with her, meaning we had messed around but no intercourse. He was like, "Hooking up means you [censored] a chick. Period." Obviously, I disagree. I think that anything from heavy making out to sex should be deemed hooking up. Thoughts?

there was a thread about this exact same thing before. Where I come from hooking up means having sex, but if I recall, opinion varied greatly in the other thread.

I don't really know what the point of the phrase "hooking up" would be if it meant "to have sex." to me it's always been used to make the details of the encounter ambiguous. so, I basically use it for anything more than making out.

Most people I've talked to associate hooking up with making out/kissing.
