Default Best on-line broker?

For the first time in my life I have a little extra money and was thinking about trying the stock market.

I saw an ad for scottrade.com and was wondering if this is a good service to use? Is there a better one?

I am not looking for investment ideas, personal service, and dont want anyone calling me about some crappy "hot" stock.

What I am looking for is a place that is cheap to use, where I can control all the buys/sells over the internet, and that is friendly to a first time investor who wants to start off really slow like 1K to start until I get a better idea of what I am doing.

Any other advice such as a good investing website is also welcome.

Any of the major online brokers that advertise are fine!
