awesome album opening songs

we had a best album closing songs like two months ago but I haven't seen one on opening songs. if it's been done before, whatever! let's do it again.

radiohead - kid A

the opening keyboard notes to "everything in its right place" are [censored] awesome. it just feels like you're being taken down into a weird, subterranean world, which essentially characterises the rest of the album.

cream - fresh cream

IMO one of the best albums ever recorded. "I feel free" opens with a crash of guitar and drums, leading into the kind of vocal arrangement that carries throughout the album.

prince - dirty mind

I don't even need to elaborate on this. this album rocks so hard and "dirty mind" is such a perfect way to start it off.

david bowie - lodger

"fantastic voyage" doesn't really sound that much like the rest of the album, but that's kind of the point. the album opens with this pretty standard melodic tune, and gets stranger, and more fantastic, from there.


I also dig the much shorter album introduction songs found on meadowlands by the wrens (the house that guilt built), and on hearts of oak by ted leo and the pharmacists (building skyscrapers in the basement).

there are a lot of good first songs on albums but most of them don't set the tone for the rest of the album in such an effective way. I don't know the song you mentioned but I'm talking about more than just good songs FWIW.

Not really a song, but the opening track on The Offspring's album, "Smash" titled, "Time to Relax" is killer... followed by "Nitro (Youth Energy)". A nice combo.

EDIT: Also, Disturbed's "Believe" album with "Prayer" as the first song is great, too.
