Default New AP poll - Duke keeps a first place vote

Thank god it's not football so this doesn't matter.

Jason Franchuk of the Provo (Utah) Daily Herald had Duke at No. 1 this week.

"I have not punished a team based on one game all season, and a lot was going on Saturday with (J.J.) Redick and Senior Night," Franchuk said Monday, referring to the home loss to North Carolina. "I still think they're the No. 1 team in the country."

Absurd. Guess he didn't have an excuse for the other game they lost this week, so he just pretended it didn't happen.

Jason Franchuk's logic is one of the reasons sports go to computer generated rankings. Wow.

If you look at the numbers, the coach that voted UNC No. 1 also voted UConn No. 3. Ridiculous, but I expect that from the coaches. They're a long history of them not caring about their votes.

Yeah, I noted UConn was 773 and was trying to find which team got a first place vote.

It took a while.

You mean like the computer generated ratings that have Duke as #1?

His logic is actually close to the rankings. Penalizing a team for just one game or moving them up and down quickly, ordering by won/loss record is something computers simply don't do.

From what I've heard, a lot of these coaches have like grad assitants and such doing these polls for them.

Two thoughts

1- caring about rankings in basketball is silly

2- dropping a team for losing one game is silly

3- I have no idea how Washington isn't ranked higher

I know we'd move up the rankings but damn. A first place vote??? It looks as though an ACC final appearance gets the Heels a #2 seed.
