Default vegas on a college kid budget

ME and 2 other degens are looking to go to Vegas for 4 nights/5days...I don't care if I am off the strip, so long as I am not 10 or so minutes travel to it.

If i wanna stay at a place i feel safe at (no hookers/gang bangers)...yet want a reasonable price, where should i stay...

Also, what days would be best for a good price (sun-thurs??) AAA discounts help??? pokerrates??

Heard southpoint hotel is pretty nice... any thoughts?

Thoughts:

Cross posting is bad. But this is a better place than B&M so I will answer here again anyway.

The Orleans is a short trip from the Strip, is a decent hotel, and is cheap even before the poker room rate that you and your buddies will easily get by pooling to put in 5 or 6 hours.

Also, surprisingly decent looking cocktail waitresses for an off-Strip place catering mostly to locals.

I would think that you are going to spend more on cabs back and forth to somewhere off the strip rather than just staying a cheaper place on the strip.

Sun to thurs should be relatively cheap for hotels.

Good point, but not necessarily true.

If you are only taking one trip back and forth to the Strip you can still come out way ahead.

I've always stayed at the Sahara. It may be redneckville, but it's clean, cheap, and is the last stop on the monorail that can take you to the real casinos. There's even a small poker room. It's not like you're going to be spending a lot of time in your room.

Orleans always worked well for us as a cheap off-the-strip alternative.
