200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
Villain is a known reg. Don't have stats or notes in front of me, but i've never seen him get out of line and i respect his play.
Hero in UTG+1 with $200 Villain in MP with $200 Hero is dealt KK. Hero raises to $10 (there was a poster in the hand) Villain raises to $34. Hero ?? i decided to raise rather than call. (Any comments on the optimal line here are appriciated) As played, when i trying to figure out my 4bet size, i realized that his large 3bet made the stacks really awkward. A normal 4bet (between 2.5x - 3x his 3bet) puts 40% of my stack, screams strength. Raising less than that also screams strength. About the only thing left was the overbet push which could have worked since he might look me up thinking i'm FOS. i opted for a normal 4bet (deciding that i didn't want to overbet and blow him off his hand) to $85 and he folded. However, i started thinking that he purposefully overbet on his 3bet to put me in this spot. Is there any value in making an overbet 3bet like this? It certainly gave me a hard time. I'm wondering if he did it on purpose to put me in this spot. Or am i just thinking about this too much? Any thoughts are welcome. |

Re: 200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
Probably makes sure stubborn but non-terrible opponents don't call with medium pairs, simplifies post-flop play?

Re: 200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
No, not calling you that... presumably he knows which of his opponents are non-terrible, and I'm guessing that includes you. I'd imagine he doesn't know which are stubborn necessarily but an extra BB or two in his 3-bet makes sure that if you were on the stubborn side you'd have to call less. Also as futuredoc pointed out it's not really that big a 3-bet, I think most players have a standard of $30 or $32.

Re: 200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
I don't 4 bet. Play postflop. If you're going to 4 bet just push. As you said, it's all psychology with your bet sizing. 4 bet pushing makes it look like you can have AK/QQ if you've ever shown up in all in preflop pots before.
edited for retardedness in the last sentence. |

Re: 200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
I don't really see a problem here.
You took $34 off a regular with KK without seeing a flop. Be happy. Don't be mad that he correctly read you for having a big pair--be happy that it cost him $34 to do it. You played it fine. |

Re: 200 NL - Did he do this on purpose?
You are OOP, right? I favor the 4 bet regardless, but if you had position on the villian, calling wouldn't be awful.
The call isn't too bad if you have position b/c although you are taking a chance that an ace might flop, you'll make up for it when the ace misses and you steal his OOP flop bet. |
