Preflop agression = .11
Here are my thoughts as to why I dont. 1) So I dont get "big pot madness". Yes lots of us here tend to get a little crazy when a big pot comes up. You can win big pots this way but I can get carried away sometimes and it costs. If the pot is not big I tend to make better decisions post flop. 2) I dont mind letting other people in with hands that are likley to be dominated if we both hit. If I have K-J and the other guy has 9-J I dont want to get his blind, I want to put him in a position where we both hit and I get a healthy pot. 3) It gives me a weak-tight image that I like. People try and steamroll me with inferior hands. It also lets me pull off an occasional bluff. I dont expect people to agree. I expect to get flamed. I am not saying for anyone else to do this. I just am wondering how many other people also dont raise pre flop as much as what is recomended, and if they have decent results with it. Just to be clear, I play somewhat agressive post flop. |

it's very important to develop your own thoughts on nl strategy because there is a variety of ways to be a winning player. however in this instance I think you're far off the mark for reasons I'm sure you've already heard. there's a few things wrong with the reasons you mentioned but it's probably better that you work them out yourself.

Raise it up...
- for value - for taking the lead - because so many calling stations call the raise and fold to the cbet on the flop Occasionally, I will limp with a big hand to mix it up, but I prefer to grab the lead going into the flop and play poker from there. |

always limping, especially with monsters, is bad news bears.
i'd rather have someone at the table play sheriff against me than think i'm weak-tight. |

You've heard it before but it's worth repeating - big hands win big pots. But pots don't get big if you don't raise preflop. A preflop raise increases the size of the pot at the river exponentially. The most basic principle of winning poker is to win big and loose small. This applies to Limit and No Limit both, but it's exaggerated a lot in the No Limit games - when you win, you can win very big indeed. But when you don't build the pot preflop, you're loosing a huge piece of your advantage.
And despite what you think, people that play the way you do are fairly easy to read. Yes, your opponents have to pay a bit more attention to you, but it only takes a few hands. Granted, if you're playing lower limits you probably haven't run into that observant many opponents, but this play style is going to kill you when, and if, you move up. |
