Jose Padilla pronunciation question...wtf, NPR?
I figure I'd post it here since it involves a subject that is somewhat political in nature. That being said, I'm only here to argue the pronunciation of the guy's name.
I was listening to an NPR report on Jose Padilla and not one, but two newscasters kept pronouncing his last name "pa-dill-a." Now, I'm from Colorado, and around here every person I've ever seen or heard of with the last name Padilla pronounces it "pa-dee-a." So I ask you...how the [censored] does Jose Padilla pronounce his name? Is it really supposed to be "pa-dill-a"?? |

at first, I thought it was with a Y sound. Apparently, it is with an L sound. Padila.

I heard an interview in which his lawyer was asked this question and said that it was `pa-dill-a'.

In spanish, the "ll" makes that ee sound. I don't know why they're pronouncing it pa-dill-a.

Maybe too, though it's unlikely, his name is not of Spanish origin? Some languages share some similarities with Spanish but have different pronunciations for the same spellings. For instance, in Brazilian Portuguese, Jose is pronounced with a "J" sound, not a rough "H" sound, at the beginning. |

pa-DEE-ya or pa-DEE-ja, depending on where you're from in Hispano-America.

Dunno. Why is Amarillo, Texas, pronounced as "a-ma-rill-o"? [/ QUOTE ] Because we're American and we assimilate other languages and slaughter them. Like the borg. In spanish, it should be "a-ma-ree-o". [ QUOTE ] Maybe too, though it's unlikely, his name is not of Spanish origin? [/ QUOTE ] Very possible. That link, however, calls "pa-dee-a" the common pronounciation, so my guess is that it is Spanish in origin. [ QUOTE ] For instance, in Brazilian Portuguese, Jose is pronounced with a "J" sound, not a rough "H" sound, at the beginning. [/ QUOTE ] Didn't know that. I do know that words beginning with "R" in Brazilian (maybe all?) Portuguese are pronounced like the "R" is an "H". |

Ground would be the same, I think. I think it changes when the "r" is the first letter. If you've seen any UFC, you might know of Royce Gracie, who's name is pronounced "Hoyce". Most guys in his family (and it's a huge family) have a name starting with R.
