Default Router problems GGGRRR!!!

OK, I'd just like to point out that I am very non technical, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

I have recently got a wireless router and I can't seem to keep the connection on it.
It regularly drops the connection, and when its working it can sometimes be slow.
Sometimes it disconects every 2-3 minutes, sometimes every 10, but its never better than that.
The icon that displays signal stregth never shows any drop however.

I decided to just buy a long ethernet cable and plug it from my PC to one of the ports on the back of the router but it still keeps happening.

I've tryed all the different channels on the router, turning off my cordless phone ETC.

Any help would be brilliant as its doing my head in.

Thanks very much.
