Re: learning chess
The best way to learn is to play as many games as you can. I recommend playing blitz games (5 minutes or less for each player).

Re: learning chess
Hey riverboat.
My qualifications: I'm nearly a United States Chess Master (being only a few points short of the 2200 rating). I've been teaching chess for years and have alot of experience in teaching beginners/novices. There are many ways to learn chess. There are books, playing, analysis of games, and getting lessons. To start out I'd reccomend the Winning Chess Series: Winning Chess Play, Winning Chess Tactics, Winning Chess Strategy, Winning Chess Brilliancies, and Winning Chess Endings. http://www.amazon.com/Play-Winning-Chess...0623&sr=8-2 Yasser Seirawan did a great job with these books and they will take you to near or at intermediate level. Chessmaster is also an excellent software for learning chess. I highly reccomend it. The best place to play online is the Internet Chess Club, www.chessclub.com, when you join you should refer me, my handle there is MasterMcLovin. Also feel free to PM me more about chess. If you're interested in lessons we can work something out and i'll give you a discount cuz you're a fellow OOT member. |

Re: learning chess
God, why do people always recommend Yasser's series. It's okay, but not nearly as good as Lev Alburt's Comprehensive chess cours. Start with volumes I & II and then work through the other 7 or 8 books. http://www.amazon.com/Comprehensive-Ches...sr=1-3Seriously, only books you'll need for a long time. That and play a lot, obv. Find a club somewhere newar you and play as much as you can.

Re: learning chess
swingdoc, Both series are good. I think for total beginners the Yasser series is slightly better (more verbose).
