Why did you discard the jack?

Tough beat.

I didn't know people still played 5CD. I should give it a shot, could be fun times.

Tough beat I guess? No clue what are the odds on that since 5CD and all..

I discard one with trips usually to represent two pair and get action after the flop from aces up type hands. I generally discard the higher card since if I fill up, my pair doesn't matter, and higher cards are more likely to be in play (he more likely called me with JJJ or JJ up than TTT or TT up - marginal difference, but no downside).

If I were you I would discard four cards so he can't put me on trips.

I played 5 card draw online for the first time the other day.

I had AAA99 lose to JJJJ4 and I had Aflush lose to a straight flush in the first 50 hands

Well, he would have called with TTT or JJJ (maybe not with TT66, though, or something), and in this case it really is super-marginal, since T and J are so close. You can see this more clearly if we talk about having a hand like QQQK4. If I get called, my opponent is more likely to have one or more kings in his hand than one or more 4's (he's more likely to call the 3-bet with a hands like KK99x than 4422x, e.g.).

I know it's super-marginal (probably improves my equity by a miniscule amount) but I'm discarding one anyway, since I want to disguise my hand, so no reason not to discard the card I'm less likely to pair.
