Default Timed Rake vs. Normal Rake 5%

Being a newbie to playing in a B&M...how does a Timed Rake work and is one better than the other for the player?

The Limit games I play have a % rake, but the NL game has a Timed rake...why?

Thanks in advance..

In limit, most hands go to a showdown. In NL the vast majority of hands end after someone makes a flop bet.

So since NL has smaller average pots, then a flat per half-hour fee works best for the house. Since limit consistently has pots of average size, then a percent rake works out best for the house.

Now here's an exercise for the student:

10 players, each with $500.00, sit down at a table to play 10/20 limit hold'em. After each hand, the house rakes the pot at 5% with a $4.00 maximum.

The players are all roughly equil in skill. The dealers deal an average of 25 hands an hour and average pots are roughly $100. They play for 10 hours.

At the end of the game, how much money has the house removed from the table?

Keep in mind that this example does not take into account toke or the jackpots that many card rooms offer and rake an additional dollar per pot for.

$1,000?

25 x 10 = 250

250 x 4= 1000
