Set of Aces
I am in a freeroll,
We are at level two (15/30 8 min blinds), I had been at this table for approx. 10 min, I was playing tight to this point, showing slight aggression w the few hands I had played. I am sitting one off the Cut off, I pick up Aces, There is a call from Under the Gun, Seat 4 bets 3X, Folded to me, I reRaise 4.5X the bet, Pot has over 500$ in it, Folded to him and he calls. There is now over 1K$ in the pot. I have 1K and he has 2.2K, Flop is QAT, He checks as I do, the Turn was a Blank, He bets half my stack, There is 1.5k in the pot, I can't just call so I Raise all in which he calls, The River is a another Blank and he turns over KJo, How could I have put him on that hand? Where could I have folded? Do I fold to see another Day and give him credit for the KJo the way the hand was played? Bad Read? I had put him on AK, AQ, set of Tens, Queens, He would not have pocket Kings as he would of reRaised me pre flop? Worst case would be a KQs for a possible Straight Draw, AJs on a draw to the King, All of whom I beat at this time, My edge is pretty good, The pot is huge and I have a Set of Aces. Thoughts..........? Thanks Habs |

Re: Set of Aces
Nothing you can do. You played it pretty standard, no way to know if someone is going to call 12x bb with KJoff.
It's going to happen more than you think. |

Villain will call with all kinds of jank and if he HAPPENS to have the straight, you've still got 2 streets to fill up on. You accomplished the goal of getting your stack in here with a set of aces when you were WAY ahead of villains range and got unlucky. Well played. |

Re: Set of Aces
Dont be so result orientated!!!! You played the hand well preflop. I don't like the check on the flop. Most people expect you to bet there. Plus that flop AQ10 has a lot of dangerous cards that could come off to hurt you. If he has AK or AJ hes not going anywhere. SO just bet it and take it down if he is weak. Sure this is the 1 time you get hurt here but oh well. By checking this flop you let many good players know that you are going to check a monster post flop, and bet medium hands post flop.

Re: Set of Aces
I would have pushed the flop and expected all kinds of hands worse than top set to call.
As played, you can't get away from top set because the pot is too big. So, while I probably would have bet the flop, pushing the turn if fine, too. |

Re: Set of Aces
A set of aces is not actually that good of a hand. You are not going to get paid off with a set of aces very often since it is unlikely your opponent has the last ace. And that means the only boards he is going to like is if he has a lower set, two pair or a flush or straight draw (if he doesn't have it already).
I always push a set of aces hard right away. Sure once and awhile a guy might put you on an under pair and play with but most of the time, you will have the best hand on a board that most don't like with that A being there and will only stick around cheap trying to hit a miracle draw. A set of aces might just be the worst hand in the world to slow play. In tournament play, I will shove my set of aces on the flop if the pot is in the range of 1/4 or bigger than my stack. The only thing you can hope for is a draw to call. In your case, you can't get away from that hand, just shove the flop and hope. |
