AIM and playing
This is a little off topic and kind of a semi-dumb post I suppose...but I was laying in bed last night thinking about this as yesterday afternoon I made a couple board misreads while chatting on AIM. When I'm playing on interpoker and chatting...typing is so hard (because inter always steals focus) that I'm often so focussed on trying to get the damn text typed before inter steals focus that I lose even more focus on the tables.
In terms of bb/100, how much does talking on AIM hurt my winrate when playing 4-6 tables? I always put up an away message now and don't start conversations with people, but I have a bad habbit of not ignoring even 'hey what's up' kind of conversations with lots of people and I'm beginning to think I should just sign off and if somebody really wants to get ahold of me they can just call me. After all, this is work. But I'm such a social person...and I love rubbing hands in schneids face and catching up with people and stuff...and it probably makes playing poker 'more fun' with less grind...so it's really a complex situation...cause mb I'd play less if I was having less 'fun'. I dunno. Anyone have any guesses? |

Re: AIM and playing
unless you are timing out you are costing yourself reads. So delta, value gained from reads * freq. occuring. not that much.

Re: AIM and playing
hahahahahahahaha, i think it depends, can you talk and follow action do all that type of [censored]? i talk on im, post and do other things while i play but i can handel all of it. if you can handel it i would bet it is something like netral to -.05/100. if you get distracked and time out and misplay hands it could be really bad, but only you can tell.

Re: AIM and playing
It definitely has an effect. I turn AIM off now when I play. Just having less beeping and flashing windows on the screen makes it easier to focus on the hecticness of 6-tabling. Plus I found that not being on AIM kept from me tilting. If I was on AIM and suffered a bad beat I would be encouraged to send the hand to friends and a "omfg can u believe that [censored]" type conversation would ensue just fueling the frustration. Having AIM turned off makes it easier for me to just move onto the next hand.

Re: AIM and playing
also if you are having fun and getting in twice as many hands per week cause you can talk on aim, then it is def +ev regaurdless of bb/100.

I'm guessing it's probably -.5BB/100. [/ QUOTE ] I think that's a huge overestimate. Bike, The problem used to happen to me a lot when I was playing a lot of SH at AP. AP does the steal-focus thing as well. The big thing I always felt was that I could play longer when I wasn't removed from a social experience, so it was a tradeoff. I doubt you lose a lot but at time when you feel like you're really needing to focus, you might want to temporarily exit and come back. Rob |

Re: AIM and playing
Meh, I don't think it's a big deal for me,
No AIM while pokering = Less Social Interaction = = not as solid play = < $ Plus, I love when I type in some gibberish in the Stars/IP chat window. |
