Okay, Day 1 of the commute game had moderate participation. Let's see who can get closest on the Friday commute.

Once again....

I have a 2-stage commute that presents many opportunities for delays getting home. A brief outline:

1. I leave my office and head to the subway (about 2 minutes)

2. I take the express subway 1 stop (17 blocks) to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC

3. I have about a 5-minute walk from the subway to my bus gate

4. The bus leaves every 12 minutes before 6:30, every 15 minutes afterwards. I make no attempt to get a certain bus – that is, I leave work whenever I can and catch the next available bus.

5. The buses before 6:30 are scheduled to take 45 minutes to my stop, the ones afterwards 52 minutes

6. My bus trip takes me through the Lincoln Tunnel, the NJ Turnpike, I-80 and a brief stint on the Garden State Parkway.

7. Once off the bus, it is about a 2-minute walk to my house

On a great day, I can get home (door-to-door) in about 55 minutes. However, I would put the average range at 1:05 – 1:20, and on horrible days, 2 hours.

Today I plan to leave around 5:30, weather is again perfect.

Closest to the total travel time wins, and I’ll keep a running tally of winners. If there are two people equally close, Price is Right scoring FTW.


Today there is a bonus game - I am going to a wedding tomorrow and will begin drinking about 5pm. I will stick to beer/wine and have a pretty high tolerance. However, in my late-night drunkenness I have been known to supplement beer with liquor and various other intoxicants. I have two heavyweights crashing at my house after the reception ends at 11pm. I only have to get up for 1pm football on Sunday. The bonus for today is picking at what time I will pass out.
