maybe this is a generalization but whenever i see an overbet on a flop like this, it usually always defines the hand as a pocket pair 1 and MAYBE 2 above the top card, ie. 478 flop, it's 99, etc. i dunno if it's a psychological thing where people feel they need to bet so much because so many cards are above theirs or whatever, but i've just noticed it.

i think potting the flop, 3/4 pot - pot on the turn and check on river is fine.

More preflop.
Less flop (3/4th pot is standard)
Turn/River standard.

I overbet the flop trying to get rid of the villan and I guess the appearance of strength looks like weakness.

For the record, villan had (in white) 97 offsuit

'Getting rid of the villain' is not a reason to overbet the flop. Are you trying to make your hand look even stronger than it is? In which case you're trying to get him to fold hands such as a10/k10 that you should be getting value from.

You should be happy if he calls a normal cbet with a gutshot, or even what he had.
