Ron Paul @ USC - A (Weaksauce) Trip Report
Ron Paul came to USC today! (The Trojans, not the 'C-cks).
He apparently had a $500/plate dinner to attend at four o'clock (me = busto = not attending), so by the time I arrived at 3:30 (worthless Macroeconomics class ran late ) he was already gone. I'm horrible at guesstimating the size of crowds like these, but I'd say there were ~1,000 people altogether. And I must say I was very impressed with both the diversity and the energy of the crowd. So that's it. A pretty weak trip report I know. My friend took some video on his cellphone (he was there for the whole thing), and hopefully I can link to it if he ever uploads it to Youtube. P.S. I was talking with said friend after we left, and he claimed that Ron Paul is idiotic for suggesting we return to the gold standard. My friend claimed we don't have enough gold to back all of the dollars in circulation, so it would create complete chaos if we tried. I'm pretty sure my friend is wrong, but I don't know exactly why. What is the counter-argument I should use? |

Your friend is wrong. The reasons are fairly complex, but there's a good lecture by Salerno here: http://mises.org/MultiMedia/mp3/Salerno/10.mp3
Even the notoriously pro fiat money Milton Friedman had to eventually concede that the gold standard is best. |

Re: Ron Paul @ USC - A (Weaksauce) Trip Report
Also, Ron Paul doesnt advocate a return to the gold standard.
He's said numerous times that all he wants to do is to remove the monopoly of the issuing of bank notes. He also wants to remove the federal reserve but nothing about either of these involves legislating gold as a monetary standard or something of the sort. If he's said something more im not aware of, please inform. |

I believe he would even leave the Fed in place if gold and silver were legalized as competition, and gold and silver contracts could be enforced. I could be wrong though. |

How could one country on it's own return to the gold standard anyway.
