Default big day for animals on my hike

hiked up to ptarmigan tunnel in glacier national park in montana today. 5 miles uphill thru the most beautiful scenery on earth.
saw five bears, three of which were within 100 feet of me. no problems though.

two wolves

one moose

foxes, deer, marmots, coyotes, bighorn sheep, mountain goats.

what a day. its fall and everything is trying to fatten up for winter.

plus two days ago i had a bear on my porch looking in the window.

Ray,

Do you carry a desert eagle or other firearm just in case a bear decides to attack you?

it is my understanding bear pepper spray is a lot more effective - you'd have to get fairly lucky with a .44 solid point (not hollow point) to really get the drop on a bear before he tore you a new one.

and I doubt they'd let you willingly take a desert eagle into Glacier.

Ray help us city-bound people out and take a small digital camera with you next time. I haven't been to Glacier in years and miss the place.

the bear has to be pretty damn close to hit it with pepper spray...and a lot of times all u manage to do is piss it off.

When I lived in Alaska the two best things recommended to my me by a Denali ranger we knew were either a airhorn ala the kind you would find at a college football game or fireworks that made a [censored] of noise or smoke...m80 etc(this was if you weren't going to carry a rifle). But the best hing to do is tie a couple of bells to your waist..most attacks happen because u surprise a bear in the bush.

One of the guys, my dad's best friend was a bush pilot and that's who i stayed with for the summer, had been bluff charged several times and had seen a friend get mauled by a brown bear. He got several shot off as it charged but didn't faze it. Got messed up real bad.

i carry pepper spray in the national park. and a 44 mag smith and wesson mountain revolver when in bad spots in other places. with keith hard cast bullets that will penetrate as deeply as a rifle.

i do take some pictures but arent good at posting them. i did get a few on in the past can try again.

is there a better way than having to put them on image shack then link them.

I don't know if it's better or worse than imageshack but it works for me.

What is your favorite animal to see in the wild? I saw an otter for the first time a few months ago up on the Klamath River and it just about blew my mind.
