Effective M - Effective BB???

So I just realized that I havn't been making this switch and I've been wondering if I could get some help establishing some benchmarks ..

I like using a BB count instead of an M since its easier to calculate.

I generally consider a M of 5 to equal 7-8 BB.

Therefor would it be consistent to subtract 2-3 BB when we get down to 7 players, and continue to subtract 1 BB per player who busts.

And would this count be an equivalent strategy to calculating a type of Effective BB?

In a MTT, if you're down to 7 players, I would probably think less about M and more about the other people's stacks in relation to yours (or Q as Harrington puts it). If you realize you're short stacked here knowing who the "active" players are and who "the trying to move up the pay scale" players are is very important. You can double throught the active players and steal from the others.

I actually had a similar question yesterday about M vs BB. One of the comments about M was that it takes into account antes. If going with just BB, you need to account for the antes which is roughly about one more BB.

Another thing to consider when down to the final 7 is how frequent the blinds/antes will be coming to you. Which I believe you are saying by the subtracting of 2-3 BB. If so, then I would think your assessment there is correct.

yeah .. this also comes into play say when there are 21 people down to 19 and again when you have 14-10

at these levels I feel you can gain alot by opening up your game ... which is where my question was heading ...
