So my cousin filmed his friend messing around dressed up as a farmer running around a field with his spud gun and posted it on youtube for a laugh, a few says later an armed responce team burst into my aunties house while she was doing the ironing in search for a firearm, they only found two plastic kids guns and gave him a caution.

Must be getting serious after the recent gang shootings

Keikiwai - yea thats exactly what they are

you can make them gas powered or air pressured.

gas - cheaper just take pvc pipe make a chamber and a barrel. screw in 2 screws to the barrel and attach a BBQ sparker to the screws. spray some hairspray or w/e into the chamber, cap it , spark it and the potato you pushed into the barell will eject at fatal velocities.

Air pressure. use an electirc pump to pump air into a chamber - like 150-200 psi is the most I ever got. Use a watersprinkler valve to release air into barrel.
