Default Spyware/Counterspy Alternative?

Just wondering what free software is recommended for dealing with spyware, I already used the counterspy trial, what other good working software is out there?

Search google for AdAware. It's free and it's pretty good.

There is no such thing as 'the best'.
Some tools such as avg and ad-aware are easy to use and have few options, others have plenty of options and are very hard to use but are excellent because they allow advanced users to detect malware without signatures. One thing is certain though, all of them have problems and all of them "miss" stuff. So, you should never use only one tool. You should have at least 2 different antivirus and spyware tools, one set to autoprotect on creation and modification, as well as a weekly full scan, the second one should be doing weekly scans.

Other essential tools that don't fall into the standard antivir/spyware category are Rootkit Revealer, Autoruns and Process Explorer (all from sysinternals)
SnoopFree, ProcessGuard and Blacklight are also good.
IceSword is excellent, but it is far too complicated for most users.

If your marketing degree kicks in and you feel the need to say "blah is the BEST" - back it up with exactly what it is the best at and why.

Edit : also, take a look at HijackThis
