Good DVD Commentaries?
I'm looking to having a relaxing/boring stay at home friday night tonight. So I figured what better time than to buy myself a new movie, but one with a great director commentary as well.
While funny one's where the actors are being real entertaining (Arrested Development commentary comes to mind) can be fun, I'm looking for more of a serious commentary. So what are people's favorite ones? Are the commentaries on the Batman Anthology set any good? I've been thinking of buying them for a while. Thanks |

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
I love listening to Roger Ebert's commentaries, but he doesn't have very many.
Here are the ones that I know of: Casablanca Citizen Kane Dark City Floating Weeds (Criterion Collection) |

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
Thomas Hayden Church and Paul Giamatti do a very funny commentary on the Sideways DVD.
Edit: Saw you wanted a serious commentary. I got nothing. |

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
The Fight Club commentary between Fincher and Norton is really, really good, IMO.

If you are willing to go TV, The Office commentaries are sometimes funnier then the actual episodes.

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
While I'm not the world's biggest Kevin Smith fan, I think his DVD commentary stuff is hilarious.
Oceans 11 has some pretty rofl stuff. I really enjoyed the tech stuff on the LOTR movies, but I'm an LOTR movie mark. Co-sign on fight club. David Milch gives interesting, if not at times frustrating stuff on Deadwood, but the cast themselves are fantastic. DO NOT, and I mean DO NOT watch the dr commentary for Suicide Kings, it will make you hate the movie and everybody involved with it a whole lot. |

I really enjoyed the commentary on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
I just moved out to DC and am without most of my DVD's, many of which have been named here for having good commentaries (Fight Club, Deadwood, Suicide Kings) that somehow I hadn't watched yet; damn my procrastinating self!
I might have to go and get Citizen Kane, I've been meaning to buy that for a while. Any other opinions out there? |

Re: Good DVD Commentaries?
How do you not hate everyone involved in Suicide Kings just based on the crapiness of the movie? (except for Walked of course and to a much lesser extent Leary)
(Because I love movies) I don't like technical director commentaries, I find them pompous let-me-explain-my-genius-to-you-idiots type stuff, except for the 'how we made this movie on a shoe string budget variety' which are cool. But if you really want a 'film making' commentary I guess stick with the critic/historian analysis stuff you can find on criterion disc and a lot of classics. of the rare exceptions, I would include the 'Sopranos' commentaries which I enjoy, amongst others Steve Buscemi does great work on his episodes. If you just want a good, funny entertaining commentary, a lot of the ones mentioned are good. I also like the Simpsons /AD commentaries and I think easily then funniest I've ever heard is the 'in character' commentary on the 'This is Spinal Tap' DVD. |
