Default what is Bettis implying here?

from this article link

he says [ QUOTE ]
"For some reason, Coach would never really commit fully to Kordell ... and because of that, we had no consistent leadership from the quarterback position," Bettis wrote.

"Nothing against Tommy (Maddox, who replaced Stewart in the third game of 2002), but I always had my doubts that he won the job fair and square."

[/ QUOTE ]

is he saying race played a factor?

No...$$$$$ played a factor.
If Kordell played a certain amount he got more $$$ salary wise.

I am curious why race would be the first thing to come to mind.

Maybe because a black player says that the white coach gave the quarterback job to the white player instead of the black player even though original black player didn't think white quarterback deserved it..

Where are you confused?

I dont think he was confused. I think he was more implying that the OP is somewhat racist or racially biased for having it being the first thing to come to mind.

He thinks coach favored Maddox, the reason for the favoritism isn't implied. Coaches favor players all the time and it usually is not for racist reasons. I don't think Bettis was suggesting Cowher favored Maddox because he was white.

Stewart pretty much sucked also, so I don't see why Bettis doesn't think he lost the job fair and square.

Didn't Kordell have a pretty decent 2001 season? Tommy Maddox played okay for one or two years as well. I'm pretty sure most NFL QB's would have been fine for those teams which were basically a good player there away from multiple Superbowls. Meh, Bettis played with Kordell for quite a bit longer so that's probably the extent of it all.

Cowher was known to have his guys. Guys like Kendall Simmons or Jerame Tuman who never had any training camp pressure despite being below average players at their position. If Kordell wasn't one of them then he probably didn't get a fair shake. As someone who's followed the team throughout the Cowher era, I really see nothing that would indicate that race had anything to do with it. I think this happens all the time for various reasons. From what I've read Huard is getting the Kordell treatment in KC right now. Maybe you could say the same thing about Drew Brees in SD.
