I'd be more apt to look over it if it was in the new algebraic notation.

this is the line i always take as white (recently switched from e4 to d4). basically my 1st 3 moves are always 1. d4, 2. c4, 3. Nc3 and then it depends on black's response. against king's indian (which you played here), 4...d6 is the most common line. that is usually followed with

5. Nf3 O-O
6. Be2 d5
7. O-O Nc6 .....

at 6...Nc6, i usually do 6...Nbd7 or 6...e5 instead, because after d5, i don't want to waste a move getting my knight back to safety.

i'll look at the rest later

General points:

1. Nice job picking up on all the important tactics in the game.
2. What was the time control for this game?
3. Obviously you actually know what you're doing as most of your moves made sense from a strategic point of view.

About the opening:

1. So, if you don't remember it's called the King's Indian Defense. The classical mainline was given by dmk (although I assume he meant 6 ... e5). I would disagree with his assessment of disliking Nc6 because the knight gets kicked. Superficially, this is true. However, a good chunk of black's main line ideas are possible only after white closes the center.
2. If you want to learn about the KID, Gallagher's two books are by far the most useful.
3. This particular variation with 5. h3 is extremely ... ambitious for white. The plan for white is to try to control the entire board, limiting black's outposts and useful lines. I honestly don't trust it if black knows what he's doing. I just think white tries to do too much.

DIAGF-

clocks were set at 15 minutes/player with 15 seconds added per move.

yes i do remember that it's the KID. i'm enjoying it quite a bit and it's become my standard response to 1. d4. i don't seem to do nearly as well with playing 1. ...d5.

as far as Nc6.....there are a lot of things i can't really do so well until i get white to move to d5. obviously my playing 6 ...e5 is another way to do that. my main concern is that its not beneficial for the fianchettoed bishop to have its diagonal blocked by my e pawn. is that a legitimate worry or should i just push to e5 anyway?

re: 5. h3- i don't know enough about white's responses to the KID to really judge this move. but it just strikes me as silly. no good reason to do that IMO if white is planning on castling kingside.

i'll check out the Gallagher books. thanks again for the response.
