Why are players still playing 3/6 Holdem, in public poker rooms? Over the years, the rake has increased and the value of a dollar has diminished. Recreation?

The rake on 3/6 Holdem used to be $1.00 or less. Now, it is as high as $6.00 or $7.00, out of each pot, if you include tokes and bad beat contributions. That is a crystal clear, "all the players will eventually bust out" scenario.

That is a crystal clear, "all the players will eventually bust out" scenario. [/ QUOTE ] I disagree. So long as these games are populated by the absolute worst players (and they are), there is certainly money to be made. In a rake-free world, a good player in one of these games can make several big bets per hour. I won't deny that a lot of money gets taken out of these games, but the immense volume of money flowing in more than makes up for that. The average EV for all players in all raked games is negative. On the whole, the average player in a 3-6 loses a lot more bets per hour than a 15-30 player because of the higher proportional rake. But the horrendous play can easily make up that loss for a good player. |

Speaking of 2/4 at Foxwoods:
I was watching a friend of mine play that game and the flop came AAA twice in a row, and the same player had the case A both times. Table was in amazement as was I, not so much at the cards, but the fact the guy never tipped the dealer!!! True story. |

The 3/6 game at my local casino has a 3 dollar rake, a 1 dollar jackpot collection, and a standard tip of 1 dollar. I tell myself the jackpot collection is break-even (I did hit quads during the special hours once and was paid $100 and could someday win the big one) and thus I'm being charged 4 dollars every time I win a pot.
It is hard for me to believe that for every pot I win my opponents make less than 4 dollars worth of mistakes that I would not make. My results at the 3/6 game seem to agree (I have since moved up to 6/12). I once had a session where I won 350 dollars in 4 hours. In short, I think everyone in this thread is at least partially correct. The rake at a 3/6 table is absurd, most of the players "go busto" but reload from their real world jobs, and good players can easily overcome the rake. The opposition is just that bad. |

But can good players really overcome the rake, and how?
I must admit that I don't grasp, at all, how, in the long run, the rake will bust a player, though everyone else seems to think it will, and I'm NOT taking into account that some have jobs and lots of money, because even those who do, IF the statement is correct that the rake will bust you, it's still a loss. I think my casino takes as much as $6, which includes $1 for the Bad Beat Jackpot. |

I mostly play live 3-6 for recreation. The players are horrible. Last Friday I played for 4 hours. For most of the time there were two players at the table that were playing every single hand. They almost always called any flop bets, and usually would call the turn too. They paid off on the river most of the time. They were the two biggest stacks at the table most of the time. One of them, a young kid that kept saying “I can play anything.” He went on a losing streak and was forced all in, but won the hand. He finally left about an hour and a half later with more than $700. The other guy playing every hand had gotten down to around $50, but was back up to $300-$400 when I left. These two made the game great, because they would pay you off much of the time.
Naturally, I got some bad beats, and sometimes got beat by real hands. I still left up about +$80. I’m up for the year too. In fact I’m up way too much for the number of hours I’ve played. I assume it just a small sample and I’m running good. I don’t think you can make much of a living playing 3/6, but it’s good for the recreational player who doesn’t have the bank roll for higher limits. |
