Default KK, lots of action, only 30 left

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t4000 (7 handed)

1800 person tourny, 30 left, I'm bouncing around 3rd-8th.

Button had just gone from around 50k to 280k to take chiplead by re-raising 2 strong raises with AJo. He was against JJ and AK and got lucky.

Ridiculously easy shove here?

Trivially super obvious easy shove. Since this hand got posted, the only question is whether MP1 or Button happened to have AA this one time.

no one had AA. I didn't think twice before shoving and losing to 77. But this wasn't posted as a bad beat. I've been reading the archives today about passing up early edges if you think you've got a strong advantage etc. and wondering if this could ever apply to late tourny play, which I am less familiar with.

I was doing really well throughout the tourny and still sitting easily in final table position with 30 left and most stacks way smaller than me. My ITM % has been really good lately but I've been waiting for that big cash and playing to win all the chips.

BUT, making the final table was REALLY important to me in terms of morale and the money.

basically I'm wondering if it's ever okay to avoid an all in conflict with the chiplead if you're very confident you'll make the final table anyway and have a good shot once there. I know this goes against the "play to win it all" commandment, but I would have been happy even with a $100 cash.

I'm just getting into MTT's on a serious level, be please be easy on me. heh.

Thanks

Do you think you have more than a 4-1 edge over the player with 77?

I didnt think so either.

You can avoid allin conflicts late w/ a CL, but not w/ a big hand. Say you're in a race situation vs. 2nd in chips, I think folding is definitely fine. But, even then, I only fold if I think I'm better than the field.

4-1 edge, maybe not. But I know he got his chips by getting lucky on a BAD move. I mostly ground mine out by being very attentative and aggressive towards the abundance of weak players, and avoiding them at the right times. So I was feeling really confident against him and the most of the field.

Seeing as I would play this hand the same way 100 out of 100 times, I guess I shouldn't have posted it as an introduction to this question. This hand in particular is just the one that made me begin to think about this concept.

I'm just wondering if the whole "never pass up a 51% edge" theory applies to the late stages of a tourny, when the field is much thinner, things become more complicated, the opponents habits are known , and the stakes are higher.

sorry you lost, if final table and big cashes are the objective than shoving is the only play here.

By folding you move up in money, but you need lots of chips for big cashes.
