Default Internet connection problem (can use everything but browsers)

Recently installed Vista, can use MSN, Skype, Utorrent etc. but not i.e., firefox or safari -- any ideas what to do?

what are you running for virus software? something is blocking your programs from accessing the net.

AVG anti virus -- I just installed Vista though that might have something to do w it, any ideas what i can do?

start-> all programs -> accessories -> command prompt

type in 'ping google.com' see if that gives you replies. if it does, disable your firewall, and try your connection.

If it doesn't, you have some DNS issue. Unhook your router and try again.

Most likely its your firewall. start there/

How do I find out what my firewall is?? I had to uninstall Norton to install Vista

start-> control panel -> (if your control panel only has like 10 icons, click on 'classic view', top left) look for 'windows firewall', in there, click the button in the top left that says 'turn windows firewall on or off', if its set to on, turn it off, if its set to off, you have some other firewall. you can check system tray, or add and remove programs to find out which, then disable that.

Your host file may be blocking sites. To confirm: try going to a variety of sites in all 3 different browsers:
cnn.com
google.com
yahoo.com
youtube.com
http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/

Hey still having that problem, for some reason I just got 2 minutes i.e. usage. I turned Windows Firewall off, but still no love - really really want it back to normal, someone please help - I can IM/phone w u too.

Did you try what i mentioned? Also, open your hosts file with notepad and paste what it says for me here. C:Windows:System32rivers:Etc: Hosts.

None of those work i cant get any wesbties up, what do you mean 'open your host files'?
