How strict are the deadlines at both the federal and instistutional level? What is a reasonable expectation? Any advice about this process in general(other than don't wait until the last minute)?

They're not strict at all, but do it on time anyway.

this all depends on the institution. my brother's school is really strict about this - mine is not. still, get it in as soon as you can to guarantee you're in consideration for all of the financial aid you're eligible for.
