So I was at a picnic in Hyde Park last weekend, and a couple of American girls I know brought with them a mid-20s male friend of theirs who was pretty obviously gay. I realised I had never met a gay American before. He was very well groomed, dressed in a slightly preppy smart casual manner. He looked like he took a lot of care in his appearance. He was exceptionally well-mannered and polite - he remembered my name a long time after we'd been hastily introduced, and complimented me on my jacket - but I am sure he could be very catty as well. He's from Chicago and is here to continue his studies in history of art.
I didn't spend that long talking to him, but did go with him and one of the girls to buy cigarettes and wine. He told me he was reading Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisted, which he called "a gay book." The girl said "You're just saying that because you're gay". I said "It's hardly a gay book, it's not exactly Edmund White or Christopher Isherwood." I wondered if I had displayed too much knowledge - no I am not gay myself, but I've read quite a lot of the authors and, before I grew old and fat, was often mistaken (both by girls, and by gay guys) as gay myself. I liked him, but suppose felt slightly envious of his charm, confidence, easy way with women (even though, to him, that didn't matter). Any questions? Ask away! |

Some gay ppl seem pretty together. This is one of them.
Its the ones that keep it a secret that seem creepy. If you like flamboyance come to the bay. Over here you will encounter many gays. Overall, they are more or less the same as average folk. The flamboyant ones annoy me though. |
