Default elliptical versus jogging

in terms of a cardio workout, how much better is jogging compared to using the elliptical machine. i usually use the elliptical machine on a fairly high resistance level, so it amounts to burning the same number of calories (according to the machines), but i'm not sure if it's as "good" for me. thanks!

Depends are you comparing it to jogging outside or on a treadmill? I assume from the calories burned note you are comapring machines. Mu opinion is your best result comes from alternating machines.

easier on your joints and stuff the machines are. Arc trainers are the best

I would think that running would strengthen your leg muscles more than the elliptical. But I friggen hate ellipticals and that whole feeling that my running motion is being guided. Plus i'm not old and my legs don't get sore so I have no reason to use them.

since ive got back into exercising ive been mixing it up, but usually like 15mins on treadmill, 15 on cross trainer, 15 on bike and 5 minutes on the rowing machine. works like a charm and keeps things (relatively) interesting.

fwiw, i rly like the elliptical trainer as it gives a rly good workout on the quads and as has been stated is a lot easier on the joints. whilst my joints are pretty good and im still young, too much jogging tends to make me pull up sore at some point which sucks.

I have always heard that the elliptical causes an unnatural movement in your hips or something along that line. However it would be better for heavier people due to low impact, But then again most do not run properly ether.

However I prefer jogging especially outdoors as I feel like a hampster when on a cardio machine in the gym.

Come on you bunch of Nancys - elliptical machines are for sorority girls. Get outside and go run. It is hands down the best cardio activity and IT ISN'T BAD FOR YOU OR YOUR JOINTS. It's hard because you're actually doing the work instead of letting some machine sling your arms and legs around for you. After a couple weeks you'll get used to it and it'll feel much more natural and smooth.
