I don't know the details of how tax cases are handled, nor do I know details of the law, but I do know this:

If I slit someone's throat unprovoked in the town square in front of dozens of wittnesses who all come to testify on behalf of the prosecution where I am on trial for murder and the jury goes and deliberates and comes back and says "not guilty", I walk away a free man.

what about if you beat the crap out of someone on videotape and the jury aqcuits you but then the feds charge you for civil rights violations and you get convicted on that and go to prison?
