Default funny situation at Trop

I was playing 4/8 at the Trop a while back and there was a player sitting opposite me at the table. I believe I was 2 or 3 and he was sitting either in 7 or 8 seat and definitely not close to the dealer. He was rather out of it (drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep, retardedness or some combination thereof).

I forget the exact details of the hand, but there's significant action on the flop and by the turn it was heads up, me and this guy. At the river I think I still had the two pair from the flop but now there was one card missing to a straight on the board. But this guy checks to me and so I bet. Then the guy check-raises me and I call. I table my cards and ask, "You got the straight sir?" He says, "Yeah dude, I got you!" (or something just as silly). Then he proceeds to look for his cards to show, but what do you know - the man has no cards. More likely then not, the guy folded preflop, forgot he folded then continued to play the hand. Of course he demands the tapes be checked as he claims to not have folded, he's main argument consisting of the nonsensical, "Why would I fold a straight dude!"

Maybe the dealer should have caught this earlier, but honestly when someone keeps putting money in, one would assume he has cards.

Lesson learned: When playing against an idiot, check whether he has cards.

And nobody at the table, including the dealer, noticed?
He wasn't the only one 'rather out of it'.

I disagree; you should never fold to a bet from a player who has no cards.

I don't think I've ever read this in a book or something, but I have to agree with this advice.

Excellent advice. Now I just need my opponents to start mucking their cards while still putting money into the pot.

This made me think of a really odd angle shoot. On the river heads-up, you bet with the nuts, while the opponent is considering what to do, start ranting that you have no cards, where did they go, etc. After your opponent calls, you then "find" your cards under your chips. Probably wouldn't work, but it definately would be funny.
