In the projects

Work took me into the inner city of Baltimore. In a real, honest to goodness housing project. I kept driving farther and farther into the city and was getting more worried every minute. Baltimore is a battlezone, and I was headed right into the [censored]. I rolled up in front of the complex, which was crappy apartments built on a slab of concrete, dusted with garbage.

No wonder people are angry in the inner cities. This family lived in a hole, with two stinking dumpsters right in front of their door.

I couldn't find the apartment, so I'm wandering in this housing project, these three old men looking at me like "Look at that stupid lost white boy." I was sure I was in an episode of the Wire and I was going to get killed. Luckily, it was the middle of the day and there were only a few kids and old people around.

The mother of my client said all the drug dealers were on the main streets during the day, and wouldn't be back home until evening "when the dice games got going."

Was the mother a crack addict, prostitute, or a welfare queen? No, she was a freaking pharmacy tech and was a certified EMT. She worked forty hours a week and couldn't afford to move out (she's the single mother of two kids.) She was like "can you help us get the [censored] out of here? There's a prison one block that way, an abandoned factory two blocks that way, and the dealers start shooting when the sun goes down."

I heard one gunshot, close, like a block away. No sirens afterward. I was in no danger the entire trip- like I said there was no one around. But I was very happy to leave.
