![]() ![]() For those of you who live in caves, the Da Vinci Code book is being made into a movie, which is being released Memorial Day weekend I believe (late May, foreigners). The question is, will this movie surpass Titanic as the highest grossing film ever? Everyone and their mother has read the book, and if you haven't you have almost definately heard of the book, and someone you know has told you to read it. On top of that, it is starring Tom Hanks. No poll, I just think it's an interesting subject that should have some interesting debate. Oh yeah, here are the numbers on Titanic. Release: December 19, 1997 Opening Weekend: $28,638,131 US Gross: $600,788,188 Int'l Gross: $1,244,246,000 |

Titanic grossed so much because for months every teenage girl saw it every weekend. Da Vinci doesn't have that kind of appeal.

No. Titanic had the 'teenage girls go googoo over Leonardo and go see again and again' factor working for it.

I feel like to answer this question intelligently, you need to know more about the promotional budget/techniques for this movie. The book was a huge recent hit, but will it translate, there are businessy factors not commonly considered that probably weigh significantly on the answer.

No, it won't - but it WILL have a bigger opening weekend.
One of the bigger reasons "Titanic" did as well as it did was largely because 12-15yo girls saw the movie several times because of their infatuation w/ Leo DiCaprio. With strong source material, actors, and direction, I'm sure "DaVinci Code" will be a good movie and do very good business (like top 3 gross for 2006) but i doubt it will have the repeat business that drove "Titanic". EDIT: ok, i'm the 8740985726th person to make the same point. nice. |
