cracking your knuckles (neck, back, etc.)
What are your thoughts on cracking your knuckles (or back, or neck, etc.). Is this bad news?

Re: cracking your knuckles (neck, back, etc.)
No, not bad. Basically you are releasing air that is trapped in the fluid that surrounds the joint. The air is what makes the cracking sound.
My hands, toes, shoulders, ankles ( ) feel better after I crack them. It relieves pressure in the joint. |

Re: cracking your knuckles (neck, back, etc.)
From everything I have been told and read I feel certain that I am not going to get arthritis as a result of cracking knuckles.
There are a lot of opinions as to whether damage can occur or not but everything I have read disputes arthritis specifically. Google it. Lots of articles. here is a quote... [ QUOTE ] There's no evidence that it leads to arthritis. In fact, people who crack their knuckles generally have healthier joints than those who don't. So should you encourage it? Nah. It's not the knuckle cracking itself that's protecting them against arthritis, but the fact that they tend to be more physically active than non-crackers, says Tyler Cymet, assistant professor of internal medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in Baltimore, and the author of a recent study on joint cracking. [/ QUOTE ] and another... [ QUOTE ] Answer from Peter Bonafede, M.D., medical director of the Providence Arthritis Center at Providence Portland Medical Center: Likely not. I'm not saying "definitely no"(spoken like a physician ) because, while cracking knuckles is common, research on its effects is not. We have only a handful of studies on the subject. None shows a definite link between knuckle cracking and arthritis. [/ QUOTE ] |

I wouldn't crack your neck though. I used to do it for a while but eventually you have to twist your neck a little too far to get that crack, and then you start to develop a twinge in your neck which does not feel good.
