Grouping ideas together
I'm trying to compile a list of different positions that are related to each other; because there seems to be a great divide that's created.
Pro-market Anti-state/anti ruling class/anti socialism Anti-war Global warming is largely a scam Terrorism is largely a scam Religion is a scam/atheistic/'agnostic' Abortion is not immoral Morality exists/voluntarism is the way to go/aggression is never justified Gun ownership/self-defense Evolution And the other group is basically the opposite of all this. Now; it always surprises me to find people who are a mix-and-match. Like, today I saw someone on Youtube being outspoken against the global warming scam ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kOIkYBx_mE ). But at the same time, calling himself a strong convervative, is a big Guliani fan and praises him for 'leadership qualities' and his stance against 'terrorism', and he also blasts Ron Paul. Or I see these people in SMP who are totally atheist/evolution, but who are big time statists and warmongers. I mean, if you can work yourself out of the religious cult, then why not the state cult? Or the terrorism cult? Or the global warming cult? |

Now; it always surprises me to find people who are a mix-and-match. [/ QUOTE ] Most people are a mix and match. For example, belief in evolution and belief in human caused global warming tend to go hand in hand, not the opposite. And this is silly: [ QUOTE ] Morality exists/voluntarism is the way to go/aggression is never justified [/ QUOTE ] Most people believe in the existence of morality but not in strict voluntarism. |

Abortion is not immoral [/ QUOTE ] Ron Paul views abortion as an act of violence against the fetus. How do you view abortion as not immoral and say aggression is never justified? That said, I don't really care about the issue. |

Global warming is largely a scam Evolution [/ QUOTE ] I'm pretty confident that the majority of people are on opposite sides of these statements. [ QUOTE ] Terrorism is largely a scam Gun ownership/self-defense [/ QUOTE ] Most people are also on opposite sides here. (The big majority disagree with the first and agree with the second; I'm probably one of the few people who is the other way around.) |

Re: Grouping ideas together
[ QUOTE ] Terrorism is largely a scam [/ QUOTE ] It's amazing to me how few people seem to realize this. Plenty of people realize the war in Iraq has nothing to do with terrorism, and yet they'll say we need to spend money/bullets/lives elsewhere to fight terrorism (just about every mainstream anti-war politician talks like this). This is a perfect perfect perfect example of The Big Lie at work. We must fight back with The Big Truth: Al Qaida doesn't exist. |

[ QUOTE ] Abortion is not immoral [/ QUOTE ] How do you view abortion as not immoral and say aggression is never justified? [/ QUOTE ] Of course you're right. It seems even the purist Nielso is not immune to being bullied into a belief. |

Re: Grouping ideas together
One of the LAST things Id like to find out my philosophicalish beliefs is that a large number of them - from varied categories - fall nicely into any preprogrammed bucket shared with unanimity with a large group of others.

[ QUOTE ] Abortion is not immoral [/ QUOTE ] Ron Paul views abortion as an act of violence against the fetus. How do you view abortion as not immoral and say aggression is never justified? That said, I don't really care about the issue. [/ QUOTE ] Ron Paul is a Christian who believes our rights are God given (it could be that he is leaning towards a metaphorical interpretation of that, but that's the way he says it). Aggression is never justified between moral agents (agents with moral capacity). This means having the capacity to realize that there are other moral agents and that one can act on it. A lion does not have such capacities. The lion acts on instincts and will kill humans without fealing any kind of natural remorse. The lion's understanding of itself and it's surroundings are really low-level, so any such capacities like that are far beyond it's reach. A fetus has the brain capacity of an earthworm. That's not something I respect above the wishes of the mother. The fetus may be human, but it's just as human as an appendix or the hair on my head. Ofcourse I prefer prevention and voluntary solutions. But preventing the mother to do what she wants with her property is something that I hold as immoral. |
