Default O/T (sigh), getting back in the ring at micro, again

Sorry for the off topic-ness, I just finished my online test for accounting, probably failed it, and its been a crappy weeek, so I'm not gonna try to find the most correct forum for this, just where I feel the most comfy. God, its been a while since I was in Micro. Used to be a regular poster, but that was a year, year and a half ago. This was where I got better, really better, at poker.

When I took a break from poker earlier freshan year, it was because I was burning out, playing terribly, and not being a normal college kid. I have a seriously bad issue with being able to concentrate on schoolwork as it is, and having poker on the computer did not help. So I quit for a while. I'm sure the better searchers here can find the post about it somewhere in the cobwebs and back corners of the 2p2 search engine.

But, I got back in the swing of things and began to succesfully manage poker and being a college kid sophomore year. That was the second time I'd started from the bottom rung of micros. .25/.50,etc etc, you know the story. I even started to put some time in the micro NL forum (don't hate).

As school got more difficult, I started pledging, the rugby team went to regionals, and putting in and taking out money online got harder, I stopped playing that much. About once a month, I'd make a trip with some friends 10 minutes to the scary part of town to Hollywood Park and revel in the homeless, degenerate, and generally scummy atmosphere. It was always fun though. Then I started having some serious bills to pay. New books, dues, $65 dollar eigths (lol), the trip to Florida for rugby, cleats, etc., and as a micro to SS player, it killed my BR. So I dialed back the playing, a lot. I made a choice, and it wasn't fun or easy. But now I want back in.

I'm so tired of starting over. If I start over again online, (this will be the third time), I don't want to grind. I know that I would be perfectly content to play 1/2 or 2/4 limit all the time, post here regularly, and get back into it. I'm just looking for an OK, an excuse that someone like Wookie will give that says "its ok, you don't have to grind, put in a grand and start at 2/4 gambool!". But maybe that's not what I need. I'm sure I've faced some of you here at the tables, or some of the older posters have read my posts. You know if I'm good or bad, or whatever. What do you think? In this position, what would you do with the paltry sum I've saved up (1500 to 2000) this summer. Should I only play a certain amount of hours per week, or stop being so emo about poker and just get my balls wet at 1/2? Etc. etc, flame on.

to be quite honest with you, i only clicked on your post to see your avatar again.

if you have saved 1500-2000 this summer and don't care where it goes, drop $600 in and start grinding 1/2. when you feel comfortable with your game, start taking shots. you don't have to wait for 300bb, just set your fall back limit and see where you go.

weren't you room mates with another good poster a while back?

if you want to play 2/4, you are better off hitting those northwestern Indiana casinos. I really think you have to play pretty solid to play 2/4 online at present. At least until we defristify. My .02.

drop in 600 and start at .50/1 FR. Games are harder and tighter than you remember. Learn 6m.

What stakes were you playing before?

I think Sklansky did an article where he calculated the optimal for growth. IIRC, it was 100 BB, if you were willing to move down the moment you were left with 100 BB for the previous level. You could certainly consider doing something like that. Start with 100-200 BB for a given level. Move up as soon as you have the set number of BB for the next. Move down the instant you have the set # of BB for the previous level. Running bad doing this will be kinda hard on your ego, but running good doing this will get you back up in no time.

wow, gambooool!
i'm in a similar position, having built myself up to 5/T before school and a downpayment on an apartment ate my bankroll. currently grinding .5/1, but I'm itching to get back up to 3/6-5/T soon... I think if you're going to try 6-max then I understand that it's a must to get Stox's new book (just ordered mine yesterday!).

Good luck

The qualifier to my statement is that the closer you get to your original stakes, the more you'll want to pad your roll before moving up. Say, if you're 1 level below your previous high, you might wait to move up until you have 300 for that level, and then forego moving up beyond your previous high until 500-1000 depending on your comfort level. If you are Scary_Tiger, feel free to ignore me.

This reminds me, now that my weekend-long birthday bender has worn off, that I need to get the Michigan Meet-up in motion. Four Winds FTW!
