I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
This is about the 5th hand of one of the 2.20 100K MTT sats that Stars runs every hour. I'm not sure if it being a satelitte matters since we are so early on. No read on opponents.
Level I (10/20) Seat 1: Porcells (1500 in chips) Seat 2: SFPathfinder (1480 in chips) Seat 3: khoos (1560 in chips) Seat 4: Ken_AA (1470 in chips) Seat 5: Abrahamdon (1480 in chips) Seat 6: domino7 (1500 in chips) Seat 7: RCRM1 (1630 in chips) Seat 8: AlanThicke14 (1500 in chips) Seat 9: rockybe (1380 in chips) Abrahamdon: posts small blind 10 domino7: posts big blind 20 Dealt to Ken_AA J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]T [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] UTG Calls, UTG +1 Calls, three folds,Hero calls, Sb Calls, BB checks. 6 to Flop, Pot is 120 Flop T [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3 Checks, UTG+1 bets 60, Hero raises 180 to 240, 4 folds, UTG+1 calls 180. Did I make the pot to big here? I was hoping to take it down at this point. 2 to Turn Pot is 600 Turn 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Villian checks, Hero bets 240, Villian raises 880 to 1120 and is all in. Hero? I hate this turn as if he flopped a set I'm now drawing dead. I was concerned about this and that is why the small turn bet, but maybe I just made myself look weak and brought on a bluff? I ended up folding but am still not sure it was the right play, but I can't decide what I should ahve done. Thanks, Ken ( I almost never post hands and have never figured the converter out so I did my best here.) |

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
I don't like anything about your turnbet.Up until then, everything is fine. You could have made it 300 on the flop I guess, but it doesn't really matter,if he calls 240,he calls 300.
Personally I'd check back on the turn. You have top pair with a flushdraw,it's a good hand, but far from certain that you are ahead right now,but you would hate getting pushed off your draw here.Of course, that's exactly what happened, and that's why you should check. If you do bet though, bet more.If you bet say 500,you are pot committed,so you have a much easier decision. Anyway,it looks to me like he's got a hand.He called your raise, then on the turn set you up for the c/r.I don't think you are drawing dead though, can't imagine he'd push if he turned a boat.He might raise, but not all in. I don't know what I'd do here.Hard to fold a hand like this especially as you already have committed 1/3 of your stack, but I guess you have to...however,next time, check the turn!!Always!! |

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
Yea I make this move alot on flops like this and if i get called most of the time Im checking behind. It looks weak and if you hit you can be sure villain is going to lead out on the river unless he suspects a draw.

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
Preflop and flop is good. Turn I'd bet 400 and call a push. If he calls I'm checking behind on most river unless spade or a T hits.
edit: these reason I'm not checking behind on the turn is because people playing these will call the turn w/ worse hands than yours. If this was a larger buy-in MTT i'd like a turn check better as you'll either get c/r or villain will fold almost always. |

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
The turn was dangerous for you and the villain gave you a free card, why didn't you take it? You also bet verrrry weak (240 into a 600 pot) which I sometimes do to induce a bluff, and thats what it looks like here. If you're drawing and someone offers you a free card, you should take it. You tried to take it on the flop and villain says he has something, so the same thing rarely works on the turn.

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
You definately have a point that he'll get called with a lot of worse hands in these tourneys,I totally agree. Here though,I just don't think there are that many hands we are ahead of.Because our kicker is so weak, can we beat anything but middle pair or a draw here?

[/ QUOTE ] With this board being kind of draw heavy I think villain would've 3-bet the flop w/ most hands that beat you (set, 2-pair, AT). Judging by the flop action, on the turn when he checks it to us, I'd say the only hands we have to worry about are KT and QT. I think it's more likely that he got some sort of draw or a worse made hand. If we check behind its possible we then ones giving him a free card to beat us (better spade draw, straigth draw, etc.) |

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
This early in a micro I play the flop the same.
On the turn I check behind as my hand isnt strong enough and there's an invitation of a free card to make the flush. Worrying about sets and full houses in micros on level I is not something I think is worth doing. |

Re: I don\'t know how to play a pair with a draw
Preflop and flop is fine.
On the turn I think a check-behind is mandatory. You have a marginal hand with a good draw - so you are glad to see a cheap showdown (given that you donīt improve on the river). If you have your opponent beaten or he doesnīt have any good draw, he wonīt call your bet anyway. If he instead has you beaten or has a better draw then yours he will call / raise you. So you have nothing to win but much to lose here ... |
