Default Hitting out of deep rough

Whenever I am in deep rough, I have never hit a good shot. I always hit it along the ground, never getting the ball up in the air, and traveling 10-20 yards.

What should I do to have a decent shot of getting the ball back in the fairway or getting some distance?

Should I use a smaller club to get some height and let the ball travel out of the rough?

Use less club, open the face. Especially if it's only your 2nd shot, Lay up to the fairway, instead of trying to hit a hero shot to the green.

I'm no pro, but when I'm in the really thick stuff I resort to the sand wedge to chop it out to (and sometimes down) the fairway.

what about using a hybrid/fairway wood? Ive read in a couple places that the heavier and larger club head cuts through teh grass a little better

This doesn't apply to DEEP rough

what kind of guidelines are we looking at as far as what is considered deep rough? 100 yards out from the pin, what clubs would you use for

3 inch rough

6 inch rough

8 inch

12 inch

lol

From 100 yards out I would almost always hit my SW.

When I say fairway woods/hybrid aren't good out of DEEP rough, I'm talking your ball is buried, US Open-hack-it-out-forty yards type rough.

If the ball is lying such that you think you can get a lot of club on the ball, by all means rip away with your hybrid as it usually will slide through a bit better than say, your 4 iron.

Take a steeper down swing- you want to get to the ball ASAP and avoid as much grass as possible.
